This morning, the meadow glittered.
Every blade of grass, every fence post, every whisker on Phil’s nose shimmered like it had been dipped in sugar.
I didn’t know what to make of it at first. I sniffed the air—cold, clean, bright—and snorted when the chill tickled my nose. Phil tried to lick the fence and made a face so funny that even Vivien let out a soft “mmph” of amusement.
The Snack Lady called it frost. She said it means winter is walking down the hill.
I’ve never met winter before. I was born late in September, when the air was still soft and warm. My mama, Sapphire, says the first frost always feels like a beginning and an ending at once. She would know—she’s lived through many of them.
But I don’t remember the last one.
All I know is this: the world looked new.
Vivien, my nurse mama, blew steam into the cold air and flicked her tail across my back. Phil pressed his warm side against mine, sharing heat the way calves do. The frost crunched softly under our hooves as we followed Vivien to the trough, the sound like tiny bells under the morning sun. Mama Vivi says...

It didn’t last long. By the time the sun climbed over the trees, the sparkle had melted away, leaving dew and the smell of fresh hay. Still, I couldn’t stop thinking about it—the way the ordinary became beautiful overnight, just for a little while.
Mama was right. The frost isn’t an ending at all.
It’s a quiet promise that something new is coming.
And I, for one, can’t wait to see what it is.
