When I calved this year, Snack Lady said I’d be joining the milking line. I got a little sick with my first calf and had to have some medicine, so I didn’t get to be in the milk line last year.
It might sound scary, but I didn’t mind. I’ve stood in the Snack House before — warm lights, gentle hands, the hum of the vacuum pump. My baby boy, Phil, was taking bottles, and we both settled into the rhythm.
For some reason, the milk just didn’t flow like it should have. The front quarters were steady, but the back two… well, they were shy.
That’s when the Snack Lady sighed that big sigh humans do — the kind that sounds like both love and math.
After a long pause, Snack Lady said, “Vivien is staying with the calves full-time.”
Now I’ve got two little red ones at my side — Phil, my own, and Ember, Sapphire’s girl. We’d been pasture neighbors already, standing watch by the fence while our babies called to each other and to us. Observing to make sure they had full bellies of milk and staying close in case of predators.
When Snack Lady opened the gate to the baby pen, Ember came straight to me like she already knew where she belonged. I was happy to let her belly up to the milk bar. She was hungry — and hungry babies should be fed.
So here we are: two calves, one mama, and a change of plans that somehow feels like it was meant to be all along. The days are quieter now—no stanchion, no vacuum pump hum, no click of the milk bucket pulsator—just the soft rhythm of nursing and the sound of calves breathing against my side.
Snack Lady says the Lord always provides what’s needed, and sometimes a little more besides, and as it turns out, sometimes grace looks like two calves instead of one.
