Many people find peace in nature — listening to the birds, watching sunlight filter through the trees, or simply walking somewhere quiet enough for the chaos of the outside world to fall away. 

I live in that quiet every day at Mountain Heritage Farm with my herd of Dexter cattle in Tennessee.

My work grows from my observation of real moments on our farm — the funny interaction between mother and calf, fog hanging in the swale, or any number of silly happenings that remind us how unpredictable farm life can be.

I paint those observations by hand in watercolor and gouache, allowing the imperfections of traditional media to reflect the imperfections of life. My illustrations are not intended to be photorealistic. I want them to hold something of the wonder, humor, hard work, and sometimes grief that I have experienced while caring for these happy little cows.

At the heart of my work is my conviction that the creation all around me points to the Creator — the God of Heaven.

My prayer is that the paintings, and the stories inspired by the antics of my herd, will invite folks to linger a little longer, look at the world with childlike wonder, and recognize that the ordinary day-to-day can actually be extraordinary.
